The Brisbane Builder's Guide to Choosing an Estimating Service
Jacob Campbell • September 20, 2026

Every construction project in Brisbane lives and dies by its numbers. Whether you're a builder pricing a custom home in Bulimba, a duplex in Chermside, or a small commercial fit-out in the CBD, the estimate is the foundation everything else sits on. Get it right and the job runs smoothly. Get it wrong and you're chasing margin for the next twelve months.
The trouble is, there's no shortage of estimating services claiming they can help. Choosing the right one — the one that actually understands your business, your platform, and the Brisbane market — is the real work. Here's how to think about it.
What an estimating service actually does
An estimating service turns plans and specs into a defensible number. That means taking off quantities from the drawings, pricing materials against current supplier rates, allowing for labour, factoring in preliminaries and margin, and putting the whole thing into a format you can quote from and, later, build to.
The good ones do more than just crunch numbers. They spot the drawings that don't match the specification, ask the questions the client hasn't thought of, and hand you a quote you can defend line by line when the client pushes back on price.
Start with your own project
Before you go looking, get clear on what you actually need estimated. A few questions worth answering first:
- What type of build is it? Residential custom, project home, renovation, duplex, small commercial? Each has different pricing conventions.
- What's the scale? A single house is a different exercise from a townhouse project.
- What's the timeline? Some services can turn a full estimate around in days; others take weeks.
- What do you need at the end? A full bill of quantities, a client-facing quote, a schedule of works, or all three?
The clearer you are going in, the easier it is to compare services fairly.
The software question
Estimating in 2026 happens on a platform. Wunderbuild and Buildxact are the two most common in the Brisbane residential market, and both handle takeoffs, live pricing, assemblies, and quoting in one place. Older tools like DataBuild, Cubit and SoloAssist are still around, but the industry has moved on.
The important question is whether the estimating service you're considering works fluently in the platform you run. If they hand you back a PDF or a spreadsheet that doesn't drop into your system, you've bought yourself hours of re-entry. If they work natively in your platform, everything they produce is ready to use the moment it lands.
What to look for in a service
Once you're comparing options, weigh them against these four things:
Experience with your kind of work. A service that spends most of its time on high-volume project homes will price a bespoke custom build differently — and often less accurately — than one that specialises in it. Ask what they actually estimate day-to-day.
Customisation. Your business isn't a template. A good service will adapt to your preferred format, your margin structure, your inclusions and exclusions — not force you into theirs.
Clear communication. You should be able to read the estimate and understand exactly how they got there. Line items should be transparent, assumptions should be stated, and the person doing the work should be reachable if something needs a conversation.
Local market knowledge. Brisbane isn't Sydney and it isn't the Gold Coast. Supplier pricing, council requirements, ground conditions, and typical trade rates all vary. A service that knows the local market will land closer to the real number on the first pass.
Campbells Estimating — done-for-you estimating for Brisbane builders
We're based in Cleveland, and we work with residential builders right across Brisbane and greater South East Queensland. Our done-for-you estimating service is built around the way modern builders actually operate:
- Brisbane market fluency — we price against local suppliers and trade rates, not national averages, so the number you quote is the number the job will run at.
- Platform-native workflows — we work fluently in Wunderbuild and Buildxact, so what we deliver drops straight into the system you already use.
- Custom builds, renovations, duplexes, project homes — we cover the full range of residential work Brisbane builders take on.
- Direct communication — you talk to the person doing the estimate, not a call centre.
If you'd rather sharpen your in-house estimating rather than outsource it, our subscription template packs for Wunderbuild and Buildxact give your team a professional starting point for every quote.

Choosing an estimating service is a decision worth taking your time on. The right one becomes an extension of your business — faster quotes, tighter margins, fewer surprises on site. The wrong one costs you both money and the hours you spend fixing their work.
If you're a Brisbane builder weighing your options, we'd be happy to have a conversation about whether we're the right fit. No pressure, no obligation — just a straight answer either way.
